New ALC Middle School Curriculum

ALC has ordered all new curriculum for extended day classes.  We have selected power benchmarks based on MCA scores and have targeted our instructional needs based on this data.




Middle School Math Curriculum

Step-by-Step Math Kit, Curriculum Associates
  • Students master key math strategies while building problem-solving strategies in the areas of: word problems, number sense, algebra, geometry and probability and averages.
  • Teachers will diagnose and assess gaps in math strategies
  •  Instruct with six-step process; practice is modeled, guided and independent: Whole class-model and instruct, small group or independent practice
  •  Ensure mastery with additional targeted instruction and practice.


Middle School Reading Curriculum

1. Word Forward- Vocabulary and specific skill and strategies- Teacher directed- first 15 minutes of class
2. The Ten by Scholastic- http:www.scholastic.ca/education/the_ten/
  • A collection of 100 exceptional non-fiction titles/topics for students in middle grades
  • Short, article-type magazine format non-fiction with engaging topics
  • Inquiry-based learning
  • Reading for meaning
  • Explores key concepts in thrilling, photographic texts that are challenging and interesting
  • Builds content-area vocabulary and engages students in self-directed learning
  • Develops critical thinking and comprehension skills
  • Creates a community of learners engaging in text-based collaborative learning
  • Guides students to analyze and synthesize information found in a variety of non-fiction text
  • Challenges students to construct logical arguments for better writing and debate
  • Mini-lessons focused on: making inferences, asking questions, comparing and contrasting, visualizing, summarizing, making predictions, building vocabulary and thinking and writing about text.
